Heritage Stamp Competition

2010 Guidelines
Aim: Celebrate the Canadian Winter Olympics during Heritage Week. Students research and produce a Canadian postage stamp that depicts any element of Canadian sports making history. This can be a starting point for a Heritage Fair project!
Note: The Theme for the Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair will be "Canadian Sports Hall of Fame". This in no way will restrict the topic choice of the fair. There will, however will be awards specific to the topic.

Outcomes:
Students will:
- Select a significant or interesting Canadian or B.C. event, symbol, landscape or person as the subject of their stamp.
- Illustrate the chosen topic on the provided template with a drawing or painting.
- Research information about the topic and write a paragraph on its relevance to Canada or British Columbia's heritage.
Process:
- Bring in some postage stamps or books on stamp collections and books.
- Brainstorm what is heritage and what people, places, symbols and events are significantly relevant to Canadian and or B.C.'s Heritage.
- Discuss the history of stamps in Canada. When was the first stamp created and used in Canada?
- Provide students with time and resources to research the topic of their chosen postage stamp.
- Photocopy single sided and distribute copies of the provided template. Have students create their postage stamp. Encourage the use of strong, bright colours.
- Photocopy and distribute copies of the Heritage Stamp Competition form. Have students complete the information and write a paragraph about the topic they have chosen expressing how the subject matter is relevant to B.C. or Canadian heritage.
- Create a display of the finished Heritage Stamps and read some of the students paragraphs.
- Submit the Heritage Stamps and forms to the MSA Museum at Gallery by February 11, 2010.
The top ten Heritage Stamps from each school will be on display at The Heritage Gallery at Trethewey House Heritage Site during Heritage Week from February 15 - 20, 2010 with a reception for winners at 7:00 p.m. Thursday February 18, 2010.
Note: Judging must be completed Tuesday and Wednesday and winners will be contacted February 17, 2010.
One student from each school having more then 20 total entries will win a T-Shirt with their stamp on it. One overall winner will be chosen as the design for the T-Shirts that are distributed to student participants at the Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair on April 29th and 30th 2010.
