Crossing the Pacific (Chinese/Japanese/Sikh)
Crossing the Pacific kit encompasses the pioneer immigrant experience of Asiatic origins. This kit aims to educate students about immigrant life in the 20th century. Many of the East Asian immigrants face a lot of discrimination when coming to British Columbia. This kit also outlines the push and pull factors of emigration to Canada, the Sikh Pioneers in Abbotsford, the Komagata Maru incident and the contrast between the immigrants of the twentieth and twenty-first century. Through pictures from Archives Canada as well as personal stories, students will learn about the impossible Head Tax that early Chinese immigrants had to pay as well as the internment of the Japanese-Canadians during WWII. Our aim through this kit is to provide an educational tool for the students so that they can learn the pioneer history of Abbotsford which is seldom discussed in schools or academic material.
Our educational kits include historical objects and ephemera along with lesson plans and write ups. They have been complied to enhance student's learning experience in the classroom.
